Sydney pool paving

If you’ve spent any time living in The Hills District, you’ll know paving problems tend to show up slowly over time rather than all at once. One day everything looks fine, and then suddenly you notice a section of your driveway dipping, water pooling near the garage, or pavers starting to move around the edges.

From our experience working across suburbs like Dural, Kenthurst, Glenorie, Annangrove, Castle Hill and surrounding acreage areas, the causes are usually fairly consistent. It’s rarely just “bad pavers” — it’s what’s happening underneath and around them.

Here are the most common issues we get called out to fix.

Sinking pavers on driveways and paths

  • Sinking pavers caused by poor base preparation or insufficient compaction over time
  • Movement in the ground after heavy rain or long dry periods
  • Soft spots forming where water has been sitting underneath the surface.

On acreage properties, we see this a lot on long driveways where heavier vehicles like utes, trailers and machinery are regularly used.

Drainage problems after heavy rain

  • Water pooling on paved areas instead of flowing away properly
  • Inadequate falls or incorrect levels during installation
  • Blocked or missing drainage channels around paved sections.

In the Hills District, sloping blocks are common, so if drainage isn’t designed properly from the start, problems usually show up quickly.

Cracked or damaged pavers

  • Cracks from heavy loads or unsuitable paver types being used
  • Ground movement underneath the surface
  • Tree roots pushing up through established garden areas.

This is especially common on older properties where paving has been extended or patched over time.

Edge failure and spreading paving

  • Edge restraints breaking down over time
  • Pavers slowly shifting outward and losing their tight finish
  • Gaps forming between pavers on driveways and paths.

Once this starts, it usually gets worse if it’s not fixed properly.

Tree root and vegetation impact

  • Lifting of pavers from mature trees common across acreage properties
  • Uneven surfaces forming near garden beds and established landscaping
  • Ongoing movement as roots continue to grow over time.

Pool area slipping and staining

  • Algae build-up in shaded or damp areas
  • Slippery surfaces around pools after rain or cleaning
  • Staining from leaves, dirt and organic matter.

This is something we see often in family homes where pool areas are heavily used but not always regularly maintained.

What we’ve learned over the years

After doing paving work across the Hills District for a long time, one thing is consistent — the quality of what’s underneath matters more than what you see on top. A properly prepared base, good drainage design, and selecting the right materials for the property type will always outperform quick installs.

A lot of the repairs we do could have been avoided if the groundwork was done properly from the beginning, especially on sloping or acreage blocks.
